How do I get residency in Ghana?
Ghana offers several residency pathways including the Right of Abode for people of African descent, work permits through Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana Card for long-term residents. The process starts at Kotoka International Airport with a visa, then moves to local immigration offices for permit applications. How much does it cost to live in Ghana?
Cost of living in Accra varies widely. A comfortable expat lifestyle runs $2,000 to $4,000 per month depending on housing choices, eating habits, and lifestyle. If you eat local, you save. Is Ghana safe for Black Americans?

The Year of Return initiative in 2019 brought thousands of diaspora visitors, and the welcoming culture toward Black Americans is well documented. We’ve lived in Accra since 2020 and walk our neighborhood freely. Ghana has challenges like anywhere else, but personal safety is one of the strongest reasons people choose it.

The Year of Return was Ghana’s 2019 initiative marking 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in the Americas. It invited the African diaspora to return to Ghana, visit heritage sites like Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, and explore residency. The movement continues as Beyond the Return, and Ghana remains one of the most active destinations for diaspora relocation.
Can I get dual citizenship in Ghana?
Ghana allows dual citizenship for people of African descent through the Right of Abode program. This grants indefinite residence and the ability to work without a permit.
