The BEST Packing List for Ghana
(International Travel Essentials for Ghana and Africa)
My soon to be sister-in-law is getting ready for her first trip to Ghana. She is super excited and wanted to know what she should be packing for Ghana.
We get this question a lot and thought we’d answer her in a video as well as writing this list of things to pack when you visit Ghana.

YOUR Ghana PACKING LIST
BLUETOOTH SPEAKER
You also want to download your music and a couple of movies. I love music and have found myself streaming at get-togethers. It’s a total essential to bring along my speaker! Add this Bluetooth speaker to the list when you’re packing for Ghana.
PLUG ADAPTOR
Bring an electrical adaptor! We know you’re coming with all your digital devices and are gonna wanna charge ‘em!
In the States, the outlets are Type A for a two prong and Type B for a three prong. So, as you’re looking for adaptors, you’ll need an A to G adaptor.
Universal Plug Adaptor
Some AirBnBs and hotels have universal plugs that won’t need an adaptor. In our travels, though, having this kind of universal adaptor is essential. Be sure to add it to the list when you’re packing for Ghana.
We love this universal adaptor that works anywhere, since we travel a lot and outlets change. Highly suggest this one.
Solar Powered Battery Pack
I have one word for your. Dumsor. What is dumsor? It is the local word here for Lights Off… it translates to on-off.
You may be staying in a place with a generator. BUT if you’re not (or your not sure if they have one) then I also suggest adding a solar powered charging bank to your packing for Ghana list.
This one has a flashlight feature that has come in handy and also works to charge my cell, which has a light too. Yeah… portable lights.
BlueTooth Earbuds
Ear Buds or Earphones. That flight is long… but sometimes you want to zone out here too… If you are an audiophile, then be sure to bring those airpods!
Ear Plugs
This one is just part of Ghana life too. Add ear plugs and (if it suits you) an eye mask to the list when you’re packing for Ghana.
You may want to sleep with the windows open and feel that Ghana breeze… but that open window comes with night noise and lights. So many places have high lights at night to deter crime… and that means you’ll be restless with all that interfering light.
Also, street noise, church noise, and animal noise will wake or keep you up at night. Just trust me. Pack the plugs.
Sunblock
Your melanin will be Poppin here in Ghana!!
Ghana is close to the equator and that means it’s closer to the sun. The sun is just stronger here. And because of its position near the equator, you’ll be enjoying 12 hours of sunlight. Every. Day.
So, pack that sunscreen.
Bug Spray
That brings us to number 5… bug spray. Malaria is a thing here as are the mosquitos. Those little pricks love me… so I’m always putting on the spray.
You can use neem oil, which is an essential oil that deters mosquitos and is more in line with local remedies. Yes, but it doesn’t smell the greatest.
Camping Towels
These pack small, are easy to carry to the beach or to the pool (because a lot of pools here will not have towels for you), and they dry super-fast!
I’m telling you, these are an essential. The three packs come with a small one and I love that one in my purse. It has come in handy on multiple occasions.
Travel Safe
You’re going to be here with your passport, cash, credit cards and whatnot. You want to feel secure. I hate carrying everything with me every time we left the hotel or BnB.
We started packing this travel safe with us as we moved about and that has made a big difference. Once you move here permanently, you’ll want to install a full safe, but for general travels, this is the best bet.
Deflated Balls
You’ll want an empty suitcase for all the goodies you’ll buy in Ghana. If you hate the idea of dragging along an empty suitcase, you can put one suitcase inside another for easier maneuvering OR fill that suitcase with things to give away!
Yaaasss! Like balls and a pump for the kids in town or the village. They will love these balls and also giving them a pump (which is harder to find). So, think of the kids as you’re packing for Ghana!
