Communicating from Ghana
Imagine being able to video chat with your mom while munching on some delicious waakye, or sending a quick text to your bestie as you explore the bustling streets of Accra. It’s all possible!
The technology available today makes staying connected to home a breeze, even from a different continent. From phone plans to internet options, there are a ton of options to fit your lifestyle and budget and stay connected.
Phones & SIM Cards in Ghana
Let’s start with the trusty phone call. Nothing beats the sound of a loved one’s voice on the other end of the line. Whether you’re calling to catch up on the latest news or just to say “I love you,” a phone call is a great way to stay connected. But beware, those international roaming charges can be a killa! Make sure to research your phone plan before you leave.
We use Google Fi. It allowed us to keep our US number but travel almost anywhere with service, including Ghana. Click on our referral link to get $20 when you sign up. Once you get to Ghana, you can use your passport to get a Ghanaian SIM card. That will allow you to have a Ghana-based number. You’ll need your passport or, if you’re staying more than 90 days, your Non-Resident ID Card for registration. The SIM card is affordable, costing just about $1-2 USD. Service is pay-as-you-go, so you’ll always have control over costs.
Text Messaging in Ghana
Next up we have the ever-popular text messaging. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s perfect for when you’re on the go. In the US, it’s no biggie to send a quick “thinking of you” message or a longer update on your day with a text. In Ghana, however, most people opt out of texting because of the fees. It’s not uncommon to ask a person if it’s okay to text them (or ‘flash them’ ) BEFORE you hit send to make sure they’re willing to accept the hit to their balance.
Instead, WhatsApp is the go-to option here in Ghana. You may also use Messenger or other social media platforms to message since it’s a great way to stay in touch with your loved ones back home.
Video Chat from Ghana
And last but certainly not least, we have the oh-so-satisfying video chat. Imagine being able to see your loved one’s face as you share your latest adventure in Ghana. You can show them the stunning landscapes or you as you are trying new foods. Either way, video chats are a great way to feel like you’re right there with them. And with platforms like Zoom and Skype or even Facebook and WhatsApp, it’s easier than ever to set up a video call.
Choose your communication method wisely, my friends, and don’t let distance get in the way of staying connected with your loved ones back home.
Social Media from Ghana
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat are just a few of the platforms that can be used to stay in touch with friends and family back home. Share your latest adventures, post pictures of the stunning landscapes, and keep your loved ones in the loop on your day-to-day life.
But what happens when you’re in Ghana? Are some of these platforms blocked? Don’t worry, for the most part, you can access all these apps from Ghana, though we suggest signing up and logging at least once from the States before you leave.
In the rare instance where you’re blocked from access, you can still get social. There are ways to access blocked social media platforms such as using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Tor browser. These tools can help you bypass internet censorship and access blocked websites. We use this VPN service here to access accounts and websites that are typically blocked in Ghana or limit access. It’s extremely affordable, so you’re money can be spent on much more fun things, like palm wine!
Lastly, we have some tips on how to use social media to stay in touch with your loved ones back home. Schedule regular video chats or phone calls using social media platforms like Facebook or WhatsApp, make use of the instant messaging feature to keep in touch on the go and consider creating a group chat with your closest friends and family to stay connected.
Grab your smartphone and don’t worry about staying connected with your loved ones back home while you’re living it up in Ghana.
