In a surprising twist on the classic “American Dream,” a new reality TV series, “Coming From America,” is turning the typical narrative on its head. When Eddie Murphy left his royal palace in “Coming To America”, it was in pursuit of a wife. Now, the script is flipped. Instead of Americans chasing the elusive dream of success in the United States, we’re witnessing a group of African American families embarking on a bold journey to find a better life in Africa, the new land of opportunity! This groundbreaking show offers a fresh perspective on opportunity, culture, and the African experience.
Blaxit is a global movement for black people around the world to step outside the comfort level of their home countries to connect with their ancestral roots and escape the oppression of racism by moving to an African country.
The Families
At the heart of “Coming From America” are four diverse African American families, each with their own unique aspirations and challenges. The Jones Family, led by Tony and Ayo Jones, serve as knowledgeable guides to expats coming into Ghana. They’ve been creating YouTube content for years on their Blaxit from Houston to Ghana. After their relocation, they were able to establish themselves and build a successful tour business helping others experience the best of Africa.
The Kelly Family, a group of comedians, hope to find a new audience and build a comedy club in the vibrant city of Accra. Despite the marital issues between Gerald and Lamara after their move from New York City, every new episode keeps us rooting for their success.
The Smiley Family, an interracial couple, are seeking a more peaceful and fulfilling life away from the hustle and bustle of American society. This twist allows us to see how white people experience becoming the minority. Gabe Smiley signed a two-year contract to teach at a private school in Zambia and the Smiley Family is the only family not to be in Ghana.
And finally, the Davis Family, led by Julia Jovone-Davis, a single mother with four children, are looking for a fresh start and a brighter future. Two of her children seem to be struggling with the cultural adjustment
The Journey
The families’ journey to Africa is filled with both excitement and uncertainty. As they navigate the inevitable culture shock, language barriers, and logistical challenges, viewers are treated to a fascinating glimpse into the realities of expat life. From finding cheap housing to adapting to the local cuisine, the families face a steep learning curve. However, they also discover the incredible beauty and warmth of African culture, forming strong bonds with the local people and experiencing a sense of belonging they may have never felt before. Watching their journeys is an experience where we gaze upon picturesque landscapes, look upon a more modern Africa for the first time in a long time on mainstream American television, and a way to see Africa’s climate.
The Cultural Exchange
One of the most captivating aspects of “Coming From America” is the cultural exchange between the American families and the Ghanaian people. The show highlights the rich traditions, music, and cuisine of Ghana, offering viewers a unique opportunity to learn about a different way of life. As the families immerse themselves in the local culture, they begin to challenge their own preconceived notions and develop a deeper appreciation for diversity.

By showcasing the experiences of African American families seeking a better life in Africa, the series challenges the dominant narrative that America is the only place where dreams can come true. It also offers a hopeful message about the potential for cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.
