Tony & Ayo ★ Going Beyond the Return

Have you ever thought about your Western life and wondered if there was more out there for you?

We’re here to tell you there absolutely is! There is so much more out there for you than you imagined.

You have options.

Tony and Ayo at Expat Life Ghana - Join this black family as they move to West Africa and help others make the transition to life in Ghana.

We are Tony and Ayo.

Ayo, the daughter of a Ghanaian, grew up rooted in her African culture and heritage. Tony, a fully Black American, grew up in a world where one’s blackness can be criminal.

When these two met, married, and started a life together, Ayo always knew Ghana would be part of the conversation and Tony never imagined living abroad.

Expat Life Ghana tells Tony and Ayo’s story as they move their family of four from Texas to Ghana and go beyond the return. Tony and Ayo hope you’ll see firsthand what expat life is like in Ghana, be inspired to visit or move, and better plan your repatriation.

IN THE PRESS

We occasionally make it into the press. Here are a few ways you can learn more about us from stories and articles:

The Road Boomer

“ACCRA, Ghana – He remembers the day he walked out of Accra’s international airport and into a crush of humanity.

All of them had a single thing in common. They were black. Like him.

“It was,” says American Tony Jones, “the first time in my life I did not feel like a Black man. No one cared about my color.”

NPR

“Earlier this year in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, singer Stevie Wonder described his plans to move permanently to GhanaWest Africa. Weeks later, comedian Dave Chappelle said he was inspired by Wonder to do the same. There’s a sudden trend of Americans who are leaving the United States and relocating to a foreign country — Americans like the Jones family.”

WORLD NG

“In 2019, American Tony Jones joined a crowd walking down Victoria Road toward Cape Coast Castle, a towering white slave fort built by European slave traders in Ghana.

He was one of more than 1,000 locals and foreigners taking part in the nighttime procession, dressed in white and holding flickering candles that provided the only source of light along the road.”
